Lenses:

  • Long Telephoto Zoom:  Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sports Lens for Canon EF  ($1800) -- This monster is a great safari style lens that is weather sealed and has Optical Stabilization.  It's my bread-and-butter all purpose workhorse.   Its huge zoom range keeps you ready for anything.  At around $1800 bucks, I call it my "poor man's" birding lens.  Sure, I'd love Canon L-Series glass but just can't afford the expense or the weight of the beasts...especially for a single focal length.  Canon, Nikon offer 100-400 5.6 zooms with IS/VR that are good and fairly affordable "safari" choices.   Both offer quite a bit more expensive 200-400 f4.0 lenses as well.

  • Standard Zoom:  Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens ($1,000) -- A quality L series short zoom, only f/4 but lightweight, affordable, and Image Stabilized.

  • Ultra-wide Zoom:   Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM Lens ($2900) -- A top of the line ultra-wide zoom, capable of full-sensor imaging without vignetting--stunning sharpness edge-to-edge and amazing chromatic aberration and flair control.

  • Macro:  Canon 180mm f/3.5 Macro USM ($1,400) -- A top grade Canon L-Series Macro Lens.

  • Tilt-Shift Lens:   Canon TS-E 90mm f/2.8  ($1,400)  A great macro lens to capture off plane subjects like flowers and butterflies while maintaining a more pleasing shallow depth of field.

  • 2X Tele-converter:  Sigma TC-2001 2x Teleconverter for Canon EF ($400).  Great for wildlife, bird, butterfly photography.   Long and sharp enough when mated with 600mm to take full-frame images of the moon.

  • Kinko Extension Tubes -- ($160) Used for increase close focusing for any lens.  No glass in light path means no loss in quality.  Does result in a longer exposure but auto metering still functions normally.  Usually means focusing manually which I do anyway when shooting macro.

  • Circular Polarizer and Neutral-Density Filters -- a massive 105mm for the SIGMA 150-600 and a 77mm adapter for the 24-105 and 180 macro lenses.
